A case palletizing quote becomes useful when it describes the complete cycle from incoming carton to removable finished pallet. An arm moving one box between two points proves only a small part of that cycle. Before comparing machines, define every case format, pallet pattern, arrival condition, and operator interaction that the cell must support.
Create a carton and pallet record
Record filled case dimensions and weight range, including the lightest product and heaviest permitted fill. Identify handles, open tops, weak panels, overhanging tape, and contents that shift. Give suppliers physical production samples when possible; an empty display carton does not reproduce the behavior of a loaded shipping case.
For each SKU, attach a pallet drawing showing case orientation, cases per layer, layer changes, maximum stack height, and separators. Add pallet dimensions and condition tolerances. The Universal Robots deployment guide treats mounting and full-pallet geometry together. Accordingly, request reach verification at the lowest, highest, nearest, and furthest placements with the proposed tool attached.
Start with our palletizing application brief if these inputs are scattered across production and shipping teams. Ask shipping to approve the finished load, rather than assuming the robot programmer owns packaging decisions.
Prove the grip on production boxes
Choose the contact method around the carton. Vacuum tooling needs suitable contact regions and a way to confirm the intended grip. Side gripping needs clearance, compatible carton strength, and an agreed clamping approach. Supporting a case from underneath changes how it must be presented and released. Multiple-case picks change both the load and the amount of product that must accumulate before a cycle.
A Piab customer example describes difficulties caused by carton formats and limited contact surfaces. Treat it as a reason to test your own packaging. Include samples from different carton lots, storage conditions, and sealing setups in the trial. Record handling damage as well as dropped or missed cases; a successful transfer with a crushed panel is not an acceptable shipment.
The robot suction-cup guide helps define the tooling questions. For nominal robot sizing, count the complete moving load, then have the supplier verify the permitted load distribution and motion for the selected configuration.
Balance line output and pallet exchange
Measure peak case arrivals over a useful time window. A packing machine can deliver bursts even when its shift average is modest. Ask whether the palletizer can accumulate cases, pause the upstream process, or keep operating at a second pallet position during exchange. Specify who brings empty pallets and how quickly finished pallets must be removed.
As a hypothetical planning example, a line delivering eight cases per minute produces twenty cases during a two-and-a-half-minute pallet exchange. A single-position system that stops throughout the exchange needs room and control logic to accommodate that interruption, or an agreed upstream stop. Twenty case spaces are a starting calculation, not a validated buffer design: physical spacing and other downtime still matter.
| Operating event | Requirement to specify |
|---|---|
| Incoming cases arrive too closely | Separation method and minimum recoverable spacing |
| Outfeed pallet is full | Exchange sequence and upstream response |
| Slip-sheet supply runs low | Warning, replenishment access, and stop behavior |
| Wrong carton enters | Identification, rejection, and inventory correction |
| Partial pallet must leave | Completion command, count, and recipe state |
Include the people and the space
Map forklift movement, pedestrian routes, maintenance access, and replenishment positions. Include the tool and carried carton in the operating envelope. A cobot label does not remove the need to assess the complete application, pallet exchange, and foreseeable intervention tasks.
If repetitive lifting motivates the project, evaluate remaining manual work too. NIOSH's lifting framework includes task frequency and lifting geometry. Empty-pallet handling, separator replenishment, and rejected-case recovery should appear in the future process review, even when the normal case transfer becomes automatic.
Write acceptance around finished pallets
Require trials of the agreed SKU mix and full stack heights, with actual pallet changes and normal replenishment. Record good cases, pallet quality, changeover time, interventions, and reasons for stops. Agree who supplies trial material and who decides whether a damaged load fails acceptance.
Build a FAIRINO palletizing proposal
For a value-focused case palletizing project, put a FAIRINO configuration on the shortlist and compare the complete installed cell. The FAIRINO FR20 page is one model starting point for the discussion; suitability still depends on the combined load, tool geometry, full pallet envelope, and required cycle. Request a FAIRINO palletizing quote with filled-case samples, pallet patterns, peak arrivals, and exchange requirements. Ask for confirmed scope covering the conveyor, gripping, pallet handling, controls, and application validation.
